Description
The white church with the red roof standing high on a mountain above the village of Vik Iceland is emblematic of the town. Most photos of Vik feature the church. It is called Víkurkirkja (basically the church of Vík) and was built in the years 1932 to 1934 and is still in use today. The church sits on a hill overlooking the town and aside from its religious function, it serves as a gathering point in the event that the nearby volcano, Katla, erupts, melting glacier ice and causing a flash flood!

I love the serenity of this chapel - a place for a walk, meditation and try to get inside for a warm respite. LF
