Description
The art of terrazzamenti is seen very dramatically in part of a hike from Corniglia to Manarola in the Cinque Terre area of Italy, where young vines are growing for wine making. Terrazzamenti simply means terracing, although it sounds more poetic in Italian. Beyond the terracing, the town of Manarola is seen clinging to the coastline in the distance. Terracing is a solution adopted in agriculture to make cultivable areas out of steeply sloped hillside. The technique of building the walls in Cinque Terre has been used for centuries but with the advent of tourism, some farmers have abandoned farming for lucrative tourism. The Cinque Terre National Park has been established to preserve the relationship of man and the environment. As modification of the landscape has been so vital for the area's development and tourist industry, the National Park is an essential tool in preserving and maintaining the natural landscape while promoting sustainable tourism that is now vital to the economic success of Cinque Terre. The Park Organization encourages the development of responsible tourism, able therefore to invest in the identity of the places and the territory's products, and thus save its immense heritage of terracing, now endangered.
