After two flights, several trains, more layovers and not much sleep, my plan on arrival in Riomaggiore (Cinque Terre, Italy) was to get some food and go to sleep. However, one view of the Mediterranean and that plan was quickly abandoned! I managed a short walk around Riomaggiore, getting a seagull’s eye view of the very end of the main street dropping right down into the harbor. All the boats are pulled in for the night and people are beginning to gather on the rocks to the left to watch the sunset. Watching the ebb and flow of the activity from above is mesmerizing. Riomaggiore is the most southern village of the Cinque Terre, dating from at least the 13th century. The houses, built on the steep rocky slopes, have two entrances, one at the front, and one at the back, usually higher up. The buildings were constructed this way not only because of the steep hills, but also for safety reasons, so that the inhabitants could escape in case of Saracen attacks. Perhaps today the inhabitants use the back entrance to escape the tourists. The villages of the Cinque Terre are on the UNESCO World Heritage List, chosen for being distinguished exemplars of the ways in which man has been able to model and transform the environment, without, however, altering the beauty of the landscape.
