Description
In the early morning, it is quiet and sunlight warms the Visari Corridor in Florence Italy. In a few short hours, this is one of more popular places in town. That is because Florence is obsessed not only with Michelangelo, but most recently with its fame as a major setting in the movie Inferno, from Dan Brown’s novel. You can pick among many tours highlighting the locations mentioned in the movie. Although I didn’t go on any of the tours, I had read the book, seen the movie, read the book again, and seen the movie two times on different flights. I think the fascination comes from the way the author not only mentions different places in his books but weaves them inextricably into the plot line so that you feel like you have really been there. The Visari Corridor is the elevated enclosed passageway connecting the Palazzo Vecchio with the Palazzo Pitti. It is the part behind the small wire enclosed openings above the archways. In its creation in 1565, the purpose was to allow the Medicis to move freely between their residence in the Pitti Pallace and the seat of government in the Palazzo Vecchio without having to deal with the common people. In the movie, the heroes used the Visari Corridor to escape the ‘bad guys’. The archway over the road is where the Visari Corridor connects to the Uffizi Gallery. It then continues on the left alongside the Arno River before taking a left turn to cross the river above the Ponte Vecchio.
