Description
On the drive from Te Anau to Milford Sound on the South Island of New Zealand, you have to drive through the Homer Tunnel. The tunnel is 1.2 km long but took 19 years to build and only opened in 1954. While it is wide enough for 2 autos to pass, larger vehicles are problematic. As a result there are traffic lights at either end so that traffic only flows in one direction at a time. If you get ‘stuck’ at the light, you have some time to take in the beautiful scenery, this being the scene at the eastern portal!
