Description
Too bad about the scaffolding! It is only a slight detraction from seeing the beautiful Washington Monument at night. The Washington Monument was built between 1848 and 1884 as a tribute to George Washington's military leadership from 1775-1783 during the American Revolution. Its construction took place in two major phases, 1848-56, and 1876-84--a lack of funds, political turmoil, and uncertainty about the survival of the American Union caused the intermittent hiatus. You can see a slight color change in the marble at about 150' that marked this hiatus. On the interior there are 896 steps surrounding an elevator which can take people to an observation level. This is currently closed due to the repairs from the 2011 5.8 magnitude earthquake in the area. The scaffolding currently extends all the way to the top of the 555' tall monument to assist in the repair of the damage from the earthquake.
