Description
European cathedrals might have taken centuries to build but the Washington National Cathedral (Washington DC) only took 83 years! Construction began on September 29, 1907, when the foundation stone was laid in the presence of President Theodore Roosevelt, and ended when the "final finial" was placed atop the southwest tower (on the right) in the presence of President George H. W. Bush in 1990. The rose window seen here was not completed until 1976. The official name of the church is the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. It is the sixth largest cathedral in the world and the second largest in the United States, second only to Saint John the Divine in New York City. On August 23, 2011, the same earthquake that damaged the Washington Monument also caused more than $34 million in damage to the cathedral.
This image is perfect for fans of architecture, cathedrals, and/or our nation’s capital! It is available in in many sizes and formats of wall art to fit individual needs and tastes.
