Description
The Basilica Cistern is the largest of several cisterns beneath the city of Istanbul, and was build in the 6th century. It encompasses an area 453' X 212', and the ceiling is supported by this forst of marble columns. Water was collected from a forest 12 miles north of the city and directed into the cistern via an aqueduct. It is not used today as a cistern, but has served as a location for several movies including From Russia with Love.
