Description
Whaler’s Lookout…an enticing destination on Great Barrier Island near Auckland New Zealand. And an enticing hike description “You will have a good chance of spotting Brydes whales here”. The hike was easy and the views were gorgeous. The New Zealand Christmas trees (pohutukawa) were in bloom adding some bright red to the blue and green scene. We sat on the bench for a long while but didn’t spot any whales. However, with the exception of two other people who stayed briefly at the lookout, we were the only ones enjoying the hike and the view. Whaler’s Lookout is the southernmost tip of Great Barrier Island and looks across Colville Channel to the Coromandel Peninsula on the North Island.
