Description
I wasn't expecting to see a windmill in Belgium. In retrospect it isn't surprising given the flat countryside and the closeness of the sea. But Belgium doesn't have the popular reputation for windmills that the Netherlands does! According to http://www.belgium-mapped-out.com/windmills.html there are 142 windmills in Belgium, 4 of them in Bruges (Brugge). As far back as the 13th century Brugge contained many windmills where cereal grains were ground into flour. Today only four these windmills survive. They do in an area just outside the old town walls of Brugge against a canal. Two of the windmills have small museums which can be visited for a fee. These include St Janshuismolen and the nearby Koeleweimolen. St. Janshuismolen which was built in 1770 is still a functional windmill. You can climb up some very steep steps to see the inner workings of the windmill. It is fascinating to see! The windmill keeper hands you some printed material in your language, but otherwise lets you wander about on your own. The windmills are located along a lovely canal and in a park-like setting so it's a wonderful place for a picnic. Not many tourists venture outside of the historic core of the city so the crowds are low.
