Description
The World War II Memorial in Washington DC is unique in that it honors not only the 16 million who served in the armed forces of the U.S. and the more than 400,000 who died, but also all who supported the war effort from home. It was possibly the last time that the vast majority of Americans were united in a common cause AND in personal sacrifices for that cause. The granite pillars seen in the background each represent one of the 48 U.S. states of 1945, as well as the District of Columbia, the Alaska Territory and Territory of Hawaii, the Commonwealth of the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, and the U.S. Virgin Islands (only half are seen in the photo). Behind the fountain is a triumphal arch commemorating one of the major theaters of war.
