We took the short ferry ride from Auckland to Devonport New Zealand on our last full day in New Zealand only to discover that it had been the ‘Year of the Flock’ in New Zealand. Painted "birds" were covering the ground along the shoreline in Devonport to bring attention to the threat that migratory shore birds face. Altogether there were 1400 "birds" on display, coming primarily from local schools, youth camps and youth groups. However, there were contributions by political leaders such as the prime minister. Painting of the birds by school groups dovetailed with many aspects of the school curriculum and helped students bring parents and siblings up to speed on shorebird issues. Devonport is important as a roosting site for shorebirds such as the godwit and the wrybill. For example, godwits arrive to the Devonport Peninsula from Alaska, after a nine to 12-day, non-stop flight. Godwits can't land or stop on the water, so they fly the whole way. Wrybills visit Auckland to avoid the South Island's winter chill and are the only birds with beaks bent sideways near the tip. However, there are only around 5000 left in the world.
