I viewed the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar (Our Lady of the Pillar) in Zaragoza Spain from the relatively warm and sunny Plaza de Pilar and then decided to view the other side of the cathedral from the Puente de Piedra (Stone Bridge) over the river Ebro. It turned out to be very windy and quite cold with the wind blowing over the river, but still the view on a bright sunny January day was spectacular! There must have been some heavy rains in the recent past as the river was above its banks and flooding many of the walking paths along the riverside. Our Lady of the Pillar is one of two minor basilicas in the city of Zaragoza, and is co-cathedral of the city alongside the nearby La Seo de Zaragoza. The rather unique name of the church comes from an ancient local tradition which takes the history of this basilica to 2 January 40 CE in Spain and to an apparition by Mary the mother of Jesus to Saint James. According to the legend, James was preaching the Gospel in Spain, but was disheartened because of the failure of his mission. While he was deep in prayer by the banks of the Ebro River, Mary appeared to him, gave him a column of jasper and instructed him to build a church in her honor. It is believed that a small chapel was built in this location about a year later. As with other ancient buildings, the structures that have existed at this site have gone through many alterations over the years. The present spacious church in Baroque style was begun in 1681 by Charles II, King of Spain and completed in 1686, with further changes up until 1872.
