Description
Ritual cleansing area at the Blue Mosque in Istanbul. Muslims perform various acts of washing in order to prepare for prayer, because Islam requires a clean mind and body before worship. Some of the larger traditional mosques in Istanbul have freestanding buildings in the center of the courtyard for this functions, but they are no longer used. Instead, washing or ablution areas (wudu), such as the one pictured, are used. This ablution facility is at the Blue Mosque in Istanbul.
