Description
In Seward Alaska, I was thrilled to see my first bald eagle. And then my second…and third…and so many more! I was even more thrilled to get this close up photo from a moving boat! Bald eagles are not actually bald; the name derives from an older meaning of the word, "white headed". The adult is mainly brown with a white head and tail. The sexes are identical in plumage, but females are about 25 percent larger than males. The bald eagle has been national emblem of the United States since 1782 and they have been a spiritual symbol for Alaska Natives far longer than that. It was once on the brink of extinction in the US and was placed on the endangered species list. The population has since recovered and was removed for the List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife in 2007.
