Seemingly appropriate for a monastery tucked tightly into a small space on a mountainside, the atrium in front of Santa Maria de Montserrat basilica is tiny and tucked neatly between closely set buildings. Santa Maria de Montserrat is a Benedictine abbey located on the mountain of Montserrat, in Monistrol de Montserrat, in Catalonia, Spain. It's a short train ride from Barcelona but a world away. After a ride on the 'regular' train, you transfer to a rack railroad, which allows the steep climb up the mountainside to the abbey. The atrium of the basilica is known as the Atrium of Abbot Argerich. It is from the eighteenth century, although it did undergo some alterations in the middle of the twentieth century. The marbled floor takes inspiration from the floor of the Capitolium in Rome that was designed by Michelangelo.
