One of the few permanent waterfalls in Milford Sound in the Southland area of New Zealand is Lady Elizabeth Bowen Falls. It is the highest permanent falls there at 162 m, but there isn't much competition since most of the falls come and go and the rains come and go. It is easily seen from the cruise boats that ply the Milford Sound and is one of the first waterfalls you see after leaving the dock. Not only beautiful, but useful as it provides electricity for the Milford Sound settlement by feeding a small hydroelectric scheme, and also provides the water source for the settlement. The falls are named for Diamantina Bowen, wife of Beorge Bowen, the fifth Governor of New Zealand. It is called a horsetail waterfall, the name given when the descending water maintains some contact with the bedrock. In Maori, the falls are known as Hine Te Awa meaning 'girl on the river' after the lower third of the falls that resemble the plumage of the Te Kereru bird (NZ Wood Pigeon).

Wherever I go I want to walk every street, hike every trail, ride the bus or metro, climb every tower, walk around and through every monument, and then do it all over again when the light changes. In every place, light, mood, color, and...
