Description
The Church of St Nicholas is the most famous Baroque church in Prague, standing in the center of the Lesser Town Square. I happened to see a poster with this view of the church and liked it so much that I went and studied the map to try to figure out where it was taken from! We found the park that afforded a good view, but I had to climb up on a cement wall that was right next to the fence of the American Embassy. All the while, my husband was worrying that embassy guards would be out to visit with us at any moment! Luckily that didn't happen. This church, like many others in Prague and in other European cities, stand cheek to jowl with other buildings in the neighborhood so that a panoramic view is difficult to obtain. Even though the entire facade of the church is not visible from this vantage point, I loved this view because of the many levels of red roofs leading up to the soaring towers. Construction of this church was begun in 1703 and the last touches were put to the frescoed nave in 1761. As the most prominent and distinctive landmark in the Lesser Town, no panoramic view of the city is complete without its silhouette below Prague Castle.
