Description
Los Cuatro Postes ("The Four Posts") is a little shrine 1.5 km outside the walled city of Avila Spain, consisting of a cross surrounded by four columns. Perched atop a small hill, the landmark site provides spectacular views of the town's famed medieval walls. Several legends seem to exist as to the story behind the shrine. One legend has it that it marks the place where, as children, St Teresa and her brother Rodrigo were caught by their uncle when they were on their way to the south to spread the Christianity to the infidels, not concerned by the fact that they might be killed in the attempt since that would turn them into martyrs. Years later, when Teresa was 'expelled' from the town due to her different interpretation of religion, she stopped at the place as she was leaving and, looking back to Avila, she took off her sandals and knocked the sand off them, saying, "From Avila, I take with me not even the dirt'". In hindsight we know that she reconciled with her hometown since today much of the towns fame and history revolves around her. Avila was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985
