Description
Amazingly, it took until 2010 for Southern Methodist University in Dallas Texas to put in place a statue of Doak Walker. Before there were the Dallas Cowboys or any big league sports of any kind in Texas, Texas had Southwest Conference football. In the 1940s, the conference comprised these schools: Southern Methodist University, Texas Christian University, Rice, Baylor, Texas A&M, the University of Texas and the University of Arkansas. (Texas Tech and the University of Houston were added later.) Although these schools played basketball, baseball and such, it was Southwest Conference football that grabbed the attention of the state and held it through every autumn until New Year's Day, when the conference champion would play an invited opponent in the Cotton Bowl. Doak Walker was a star in the 1940s: he could handle any position on the football field - offense, defense, punter and place kicker. He even called the plays. His swivel-hipped style helped him become the first to win the Heisman Trophy as a college junior. Every year now, the best running back in college football is presented the Doak Walker Award. Let's just skip over the years of the death penalty and remember those days of the 40s!
