Description
The green and white striped awnings of the historic Escambia County Courthouse in Pensacola FL are quite arresting, standing out against the white of the limestone building. They are definitely the first thing you notice about the building and maybe the only thing that you remember! They soften the exterior and probably provide needed protection from the sun for the interior. The Escambia County Courthouse was formerly known as the United States Customs House & Post Office. Florida was transferred to the United States in 1821, yet Pensacola had no building in which to conduct affairs of the federal government for more than thirty years. When the building was constructed in 1887, the post office was on the first floor, customs operations on the second and federal court on the third and fourth floors. In the 1930s the state and federal government arranged for a trade in properties so this building became the county courthouse. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
