The cemetery in Palazzolo Acreide Sicily lives up to the name of Cimitero Monumentale. Not only is it a large cemetery but many of the tombs are very large and ornate. The cemetery is a place of memory, remembrance, and art. Many of the graves are marked with the photos of the loved ones interred within/below. Many have fresh flowers. Many are works of art in and of themselves. Large and elaborate tombs were a status symbol for aristocaratic families in the past. The cemetery dates from the late 1800s.
