It's a challenge to take a photo of Piazza del Campo, or Il Campo, the principal public space of the historic center of Siena, Tuscany, Italy. The bowl-like shape of the square makes it difficult to figure out what is level and what represents one beer too many! Il Campo is regarded as one of Europe's greatest medieval squares. It is renowned worldwide for its architectural integrity where the palazzi signorilli that line the square have unified rooflines. The homogenous architectural form of the square was not an accidental happening; the government created guidelines in 1297, before the actual building of the square and civic buildings. If structures didn't adhere, they were torn down. This signifies that it was always the city leader's intention to create a harmonious structure between the buildings and the square.
