Description
The Knights of Phythias Castle Hall is a replica of a medieval civic building and is one of the architectural jewels of Sundance Square in Fort Worth TX. You can hardly miss noticing the knight at the top of the building but beyond noticing it, I hardly paid it any attention. That is, until recently when I became more interested in the historic buildings of Fort Worth. The first Knights of Pythias Castle Hall ever built was constructed on this site in 1881, and it burned in 1901. Later that year, the building was rebuilt from the ruins and the design was altered somewhat by the addition of the gabled roof and the turret on the corner. The building was also the site of the first offset printing press and the first washeteria. In 1981, when the building was restored, a replica of the original knight (cast in 1882) was placed on the building. The principal tenant today is Haltom's Jewelers. The Knights of Pythias is a fraternal organization and secret society founded at Washington, DC, on 19 February 1864. The Knights of Pythias was the first fraternal organization to receive a charter under an act of the United States Congress. It was founded by Justus H. Rathbone, who had been inspired by a play by the Irish poet John Banim about the legend of Damon and Pythias. This legend illustrates the ideals of loyalty, honor and friendship that are the center of the order..
