Description
The Lake of the Inca at Portillo was a long drive from Santiago Chile. To paraphrase a well known phrase, the drive was hours of boredom punctuated by moments of fun, beauty and excitement! The fun part was lunch and a tour at a winery on the way, the beauty was the rugged landscape of the Andes mountains themselves as we drove east towards the mountains. And the excitement was a short section of the road before reaching Portillo known as Los Caracoles (the snails). It is a series of 20+ hard switchbacks on a very steep incline. The lake itself is at an altitude of 9450’ and there is a hotel and ski resort located there. Here it is mid-summer with wildflowers blooming and hardly any snow in sight on the peaks. The color of the lake is a beautiful blue. Legend has it that during the wedding of Incan prince to the most beautiful woman in the empire high up in the mountains, the princess fell from a cliff to her death. As her body was consigned to the depths of the lake in burial, the water turned deep blue, the same color as her eyes.

I love your description of your trip to here. Years ago I did the Inca Trail (when not so popular) and then down to Inca Lines,. Your trip takes me back. Lovely photo.
