Sports fans remember the disastrous Super Bowl held in Arlington TX on February 6, 2011. A freak ice and snow storm blanketed the area right when fans were trying to arrive for all the pregame festivities. ESPN broadcast from Sundance Square in Fort Worth TX and a visit to the area showed the broadcasters shivering in the outdoor booth. Fort Worth's mounted patrol kept watch over things in the Sundance Square area, although it was probably too cold for anyone to cause any trouble! Here are shown two of the horses on the job. The Fort Worth mounted patrol was formed in the 1970s in response to problems in the Stockyards area of the city but also partly in response to a desire to pay homage to the city's western heritage. Horses have been used for riot and crowd control for centuries. The crowd control training is arduous and very demanding for both horse and rider. The Fort Worth Mounted Unit conducts training in these techniques every month and is ready any day to assemble and, with the help of SWAT and other crowd-control officers, to help deal with any such problem. More than likely the Super Bowl festivities duty was more fun (albeit cold) than dangerous for the horses and riders of the patrol!
