Description

Of all the photos I have seen of ostriches, none shows them amid a field of wildflowers! This one was photographed in the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania Africa, within the Nogorongoro Conservation Area. In the springtime, the grassland of the crater floor is covered in yellow wildflowers, which I was told are wild marigolds. Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest caldera (collapsed volcano) with an area of 250 sq km and housing over 20,000 animals. It has global importance for biodiversity conservation due to the presence of threatened species, the density of wildlife inhabiting the area, and the annual migration of wildebeest, zebra, etc. Ostriches are among the animals living in the crater. They are large flightless birds. They are the heaviest living birds, and the fastest birds on land, with the ability to run 40+ mph. They are found natively in the wild only in Africa.
