Description
Icelandic horses are known to be friendly! Indeed, when we arrived near this troop, they came bounding over to the fence to visit with us, poking their noses into our camera lenses. They seemed very eager to interact with us. The Icelandic horse is a unique breed of smallish horses that came to Iceland with the first settlers from Norway 1100 years ago. Archeological digs in Europe have revealed that it is descended from an ancient breed of horses that is now extinct outside of Iceland, where it has been preserved in isolation. Icelandic horses are long-lived and hardy and have a double coat developed for extra insulation in cold temperatures. They are known as an ‘easy keeper’, a livestock animal that can live on little food. In Iceland they have few diseases; Icelandic law prevents other breeds of horses from being imported into the country and exported animals are not allowed to return. Icelandic horses still play a large part in Icelandic life, despite increasing mechanization and road improvements that diminish the necessity for their use. They are still used for traditional sheepherding in the Icelandic highlands, but most are used for competition and leisure riding.
