The walls of Avila Spain are the city's principal historic feature and a walk along the ramparts is a wonderful way to see the town and countryside in a whole different light. This impressive defense construction has a perimeter of 2516 m, 87 turrets and 9 gates and they are the best-conserved example of their kind in the world. You can walk atop 1700 m of the wall. The work on the walls was started in 1090 but most of the walls appear to have been rebuilt in the 12th century. The structure here is the top of Puerta del Carmen, one of the nine gates. The Puerta del Carmen (Gate of El Carmen) is a skewed entrance, meaning that to gain access from the outside, a turn is necessary, which prevents it from being approached head-on. This formula was very common in Moslem military architecture and guaranteed a better defense system by impeding a head-on attack. In 1985, the old city of Avila and its extramural churches were declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO.

My photographic goal is to travel the world in a curious yet respectful way, taking the time to see and understand the unique story of each place I visit. Wherever I go I want to walk every street, hike every trail, ride the bus or metro, climb every tower, walk around and through every monument, and then do it all over again when the light changes. In every place, light, mood, color, and...
