Description
St Peter's square can be reached along the grand approach along the Via della Conciliazione (Road of the Conciliation). Curiously (or perhaps not), it was Benito Mussolini who was largely responsible for creating the grand boulevard and the current view of St Peter's. Previously, the district consisted of more historic narrow and dark lanes. However, what these lanes concealed was the typical Baroque 'surprise' that one would receive, when, at the very end of the lanes of the Borgo, the huge Piazza and Basilica would suddenly appear. Thus, judgement of the undertaking of the wide boulevard and grand view is as much negative as positive.
