At first we thought a visit to Tiritiri Matangi, an open nature reserve close to Auckland New Zealand, sounded like a great way to spend the day. Several hours later we felt privileged. The Auckland Conservation Management Strategy allows only about 120 people a day to visit, and only on some days of the week. This meant that only about 30,000 of the 2 million+ visitors to Auckland each year can visit...only 1-2%!. Amazingly, we were able to book this trip the day before! It is a place of incredible beauty and a story of the passion, dedication, and determination of the supporters of Tiritiri Matangi Incorporated. A hundred and twenty years of farming had seen this 220-hectare island stripped of 94% of its native bush. But between 1984 and 1994, volunteers planted between 250,000 and 300,000 native trees.
