Some writers say that Vernazza is the most picturesque of the Cinque Terre towns. It is certainly one of the busiest and most popular. It is a variation of the theme of houses clinging to the rocky hillsides above the harbor. Vernazza has the only natural harbor in the Cinque Terre, made even more calm by the breakwater. It is nestled under the shadows of an ancient castle on one side (on the hill to the left) and a dramatic seaside church (with the octagonal tower on the lower right). In the distance along the coastline you can see the northernmost of the Cinque Terre towns, Monterosso. This photo is taken from the hiking trail that leads from Vernazza to Corneglia. Cinque Terre is a string of five centuries-old seaside villages on the rugged Italian Riviera coastline in the Liguria region of Italy.
