On a spring day where it threatened rain, we took a trip to Mou Waho, an island in the middle of Lake Wanaka near the town of Wanaka in the Otago region of New Zealand. There we visited with Wilson, one of the resident buff weka flightless birds. Mou Waho is a predator-free island nature reserve where the buff weka was introduced in 2004. Incredibly curious brown flightless birds the size of a chicken, they are native to New Zealand and love to get all up in your business. Curious, feisty and bold, they will follow you, and steal anything and everything. The buff weka is itself a predator, feeding on other native wildlife such as the weta and Southern Alps Geckos. For this reason students of the local Mount Aspiring College built 40 small wooden motels for these animals to safely live in. In addition to being predator-free, Mou Waho is also people-free, an added bonus. Mou Wahou is a very special place in New Zealand that gives you the chance to step back in time.

Wherever I go I want to walk every street, hike every trail, ride the bus or metro, climb every tower, walk around and through every monument, and then do it all over again when the light changes. In every place, light, mood, color, and...
