A dramatic pre-dawn view from Burns Overlook in Badlands National Park, South Dakota. Erosion is the defining feature of the landscape here. This overlook is named after the homestead of Wilson Burns, who raised sheep in the basin during the early 20th century. A freshwater spring was a rare commodity that kept this operation going. Now wells must be dug a few thousand feet deep. Managing to hold on for the early years of the 20th century, most homesteaders were driven out of the area by the drought associated with the Dustbowl era. The Badlands were formed by the geologic forces of deposition and erosion. Deposition of sediments began 69 million years ago when an ancient sea stretched across what is now the Great Plains. After the sea retreated, successive land environments, including rivers and flood plains, continued to deposit sediments.
