It seemed like cheating….just coasting along the shoulder of the road in Costa Rica, photographing birds in the field from the air conditioned comfort of the van! This was one of a pair of black-bellied whistling ducks checking out the plowed field intent on finding some food. While this was convenient for us, it may not have been popular with the farmers since their diet is comprised of plant materials and they are attracted to areas where corn and rice are grown, potentially damaging the crops. The Black-bellied Whistling-Duck is a highly gregarious Neotropical duck that is restricted to the New World. Distinguished from all other whistling-ducks by its red bill, pink feet, and white wing-patch, it is more arboreal than other whistling-ducks. The Black-bellied Whistling-Duck forms lifelong pair bonds and breeds in its first year. The status of this species appears to be secure due in part to its lack of importance as a game species.
