At the center of St Peter's square stands an Egyptian obelisk of red granite standing 25.5 m high. Counting the base and the cross on top, it stands 41 m. The oelisk was originally erected at Heliopolis by an unknown pharaoh of the Fifth dynasty of Egypt (c. 2494 BCE - 2345 BCE). During its approsimately 4400 year history, it has been successfully moved 3 times. The first move was to the Julian forum of Alexandria where it stood until 37 CE, after which Caligula had it transferred to Rome to the Circus of Nero. It was moved to its current site in 1586. It is the only obelisk in Rome that has not toppled since ancient Roman times. Though Bernini had no influence on its placement, he did use it as the centerpiece of the piazza.

Wherever I go I want to walk every street, hike every trail, ride the bus or metro, climb every tower, walk around and through every monument, and then do it all over again when the light changes. In every place, light, mood, color, and...
