Description
Seville is a city of tiles. Tiles adorn outside walls of all kinds of buildings, inside walls of everything from taverns to places of worship, street signs, restaurant signs, public benches, you name it, it is probably tiled. The 12th century Moors were the first in Spain to decorate the walls, floors, ceilings, and facades of their religious and secular buildings with colorful tiles laid in geometric patterns. Figurative motifs were introduced during the Renaissance period. The Plaza de Espana is a large complex with buildings running around the edge accessible over a moat by numerous ceramic-tiled bridges representing the four ancient kingdoms of Spain. The bridges aren't just for crossing the moat, they are works of art!
