A close up of some of the shops lining the Ponte Vecchio and facing the Arno River in Florence Italy. Back in the middle ages, the shops along the bridge included butchers, fishmongers and tanners, creating quite a stench. In 1593, Ferdinand I decreed that only goldsmiths and jewellers be allowed to have their shops on the bridge. Tradition continues, with a Rolex sign in one of the windows. I’m sure those supports holding up the shops overhanging the river are just fine, don’t you think?
