We didn’t have to go far from our lodgings in Costa Rica to see toucans. Sitting on the patio one morning, they flew high into the tree right above us. Our necks hurt from looking up and our arms hurt from holding our cameras but we searched to find an open ‘window’ where we could see them clearly through the foliage. This is the yellow-throated toucan, a large, black and yellow toucan most notable for its massive, bicolored bill. This species has a total length of 47–61 cm (19–24 in) and weighs from 584 to 746 g (1.287 to 1.645 lb). It occurs from southeastern Honduras south to western Ecuador, where it occurs in the lowlands. Across its large geographic range, the Yellow- throated Toucan is notable for its yelping, far-carrying cry. It is largely frugivorous, but occasionally feeds on insects, lizards, and the eggs of other birds.
