Description
On a cruise along the Zambezi River near Victoria falls, we saw crocodiles sunning themselves on the rocks in the middle of the river. Being cold-blooded animals, crocodiles cannot generate their own heat and rely on basking in the sun to do this, which is why you see so many crocodiles lying on the shore or rocks, soaking up the sun’s rays. Some ‘fun’ facts regarding crocs: they have the most acidic stomachs of any living animal. They have what is knows as gastroliths in their stomachs, which are basically rocks, which along with the acidic stomach environment, allows them to crush and break down food completely. They also have the most powerful bit force in the animal kingdom so they can latch onto their prey and hang on until the prey is drowned. Phew! I was happy to be safely removed from this croc on a boat!
