It was a very cold day in Zaragoza Spain, and I was doubly cold having just come down from climbing one of the cathedral towers where the winds at the top were about 35kmh! So I looked for a place in the Plaza del Pilar to sit, but it had to be out of the wind and in the sun! I found some steps that had the added attraction of having a great view of the cathedral: the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar (Basilica de Nuestra Senora del Pilar). I was not anxious to move at that point so I spent some time propped up against a lamppost lazily photographing the domes and towers on the cathedral. The Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar is one of two minor basilicas in the city of Zaragoza, and is co-cathedral of the city alongside the nearby La Seo de Zaragoza. The rather unique name of the church comes from an ancient local tradition which takes the history of this basilica to 2 January 40 CE in Spain and to an apparition by Mary the mother of Jesus to Saint James.
