The beach near Wizard Hill on San Cristobel Island in the Galapagos (Ecuador) was a really fun place to watch blue footed boobies plunge diving. They circle overhead until they spot their prey, then they fold their wings and dive headfirst into the water, impacting at speeds of more than 20 m/s (~45 mph). To take off from the water they flap their wings and ‘run’ on the water’s surface; you can see two ‘footsteps’ in this photo as the bird gets airborne. Try as I might, I never did catch them right before they entered the water. But I was able to photograph them as they got airborne again for the next plunge dive! We spent nearly an hour trying and trying again and had great fun doing it. Wizard Hill beach or Cerro Brujo, is an eroded hill on San Cristobal’s northwestern tip with one of the most picturesque beaches in the Galapagos.
