Artist's Description
Probably the most photographed rorbeur (fisherman’s cottages) in Lofoten Norway are in the small village of Hamnoy, in Moskenes Municipality in Nordland near the village of Reine. It’s considered one of the most beautiful places of all in Lofoten and is likely the most photographed. The red buildings are traditional fisherman’s cottages but many are now hotels/accommodations. These cabins are most commonly found in northern Norway and especially in the Lofoten Islands. What is characteristic of many of these buildings is that they are built on poles and standing partly in the ocean. Most of them are red since this was the cheapest paint color. Their history dates to at least 1000 years ago. Fishing was always good here and fishermen would travel to the area to take part in the abundant winter seasonal cod fishing. In 1120 the king decided that rorbuer would be built for the traveling fishermen to stay in. Today, the winter cod fishing is still an important part of the economy...
About Joan Carroll
Protected with PIXSY About Joan Carroll: I am a Fort Worth Texas-based outdoor photographer who feels at home while on the road...in Texas, in the US, around the world. In every place, light, mood, color, and...
