As you hike the higher trails in the Cinque Terre in Liguria area of Italy, you get a completely different view of the towns compared with the hikes on the lower trails. This is a view of Vernazza taken from the trail to the sanctuary (church) high up in the hillside above the town. Rainstorms had passed through earlier and the seas were still rough, so there were fewer people relaxing on the piazza, and more beginning to gather on the breakwater to watch the waves crashing! Vernazza dates from at least the year 1080, where records refer to it as an active maritime base. Reference to the Church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia of Vernazza (the tall yellow tower in the center) occurs in 1318, although some scholars believe it existed for a century or more before that. Today, the Cinque Terre is recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and in 1999 the National Park of the Cinque Terre was created.
