There is a WOW factor on first entering the Mezquita in Cordoba Spain, first for the beauty and symmetry, but then also for the architectural wonder that it is. The Mezquita is regarded as one of the most accomplished monuments of Moorish architecture. The hypostyle hall was once described as having “countless pillars like rows of palm trees in the oases of Syria”. It was also said that "the beauty of the mosque was so dazzling that it defied any description.". In the hall there are 856 columns of jasper, onyx, marble, granite, and porphyry. The famous alternating red and white voussoirs (wedge-shaped elements) of the arches were inspired by those in the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. Construction of the mosque began in 784 and continued under various Muslim rulers. The Great Mosque of Córdoba held a place of importance amongst the Islamic community of al-Andalus (today Andalucia) for several centuries. Today the Mezquita-Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

In every place, light, mood, color, and...
