Inspiring many a writer, artist and photographer, and one of the most recognizable buildings in the world, Notre Dame Cathedral sits alongside the Seine River on the Ile de la Cite in Paris France. At night, it glows gently and beckons lovers to stroll along the quays. The tourists may rule in the plaza above, but...amazingly... just a few steps down to the quay and you lose most of the crowds. Notre Dame is widely considered to be one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture and was essentially complete by 1345. It was among the first buildings in the world to use the flying buttress. The building was not originally designed to include the flying buttresses around the choir and nave but after the construction began and the thinner walls grew ever higher, stress fractures began to occur as the walls pushed outward.
