Artist's Description

A popular activity in Kenai Fjords National Park near Seward Alaska is to take a short hike on the Exit Glacier. You hike on a trail part way up the mountain, then detour over to the glacier to don crampons, harnesses, and helmets. After an orientation about how to walk with crampons and where to walk (and not walk), you talk off for a short glacier adventure. Kenai Fjords National Park contains the Harding Icefield, one of the largest ice fields in the United States, and is named for the numerous fjords carved by glaciers moving down the mountains from the ice field. The field is the source of at least 38 glaciers, the largest of which is Bear Glacier. However, Exit Glacier is probably the most popular and accessible of the Harding Icefield glaciers. Runoff from the glacier flows into the Resurrection River seen in the middle distance.
