Description
I arrived at the Pensacola lighthouse one afternoon with only 15 minutes left to climb to the top but with nearly two hours until sunset! After my quick trip to see the view at the top I sat on the beach, taking occasional photos as dusk deepened, just waiting for the lighthouse to light up. The cloud shapes came and went but for a few minutes there was beautifully rich cloud color lit by the setting sun. The current lighthouse is the third in Pensacola and stands 150 feet (46 m) tall. It also sits on a 40-foot (12 m) bluff on the Pensacola Naval Air Station, placing the light 190 feet (58 m) above sea level. The new location allows the tower to serve as the rear range light marking the passage across the Pensacola Bar. The Pensacola Light remains an active aid to navigation. The lighthouse tower and associated buildings were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
