The plum trees in the “Plum Tree Slope” of the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo Japan were planted before the East Gardens opened to the public in 1968. They were just starting to bloom in early February and provided a subtle new color to the winter landscape. It is thought that plum trees were planted here by Ota Dokan (1432-1486), the fifteenth-century warlord who built the first castle on this site. Dokan’s castle included a Tenjin shrine, to enshrine a famous poet-scholar and politician who loved plum blossoms and which traditionally have plum trees in their grounds. Plum trees come in many varieties and range in color from white to dark pink.
