Prayer wheels are used by many Tibetans every day, sometimes for hours on end. Prayer wheels come in may sizes ranging from the small hand-held ones seen here to larger ones turned by flowing water, heat, wind, or even electricity. They may also be a part of a row installation, a familiar sight at monasteries. Prayer wheels are used to accumulate wisdom and merit (good karma) and to purify negativities (bad karma). Prayer wheels are filled with copies of mantras associated with particular deities such as the familiar mantra “om mani padme hum.” The mantra is printed on very thin tissue paper as many times as possible, in some cases numbering in the millions. The paper is wrapped around a spindle and covered with a protective cylinder. Turning a prayer wheel with millions of mantras inside is the equivalent of saying those millions of mantras, but it is achieved in a fraction of the time.
